Since this question has been asked so many times by new forum users or just those new to the iPhone 4 I'm going to post several key points to consider to help you troubleshoot loss of signal, dropped calls even when showing signal bars, no data connectivity, etc.
1. Your cellular carrier is experiencing technical difficulties either with their systems or the tower in your area. Call your cellular carrier to confirm/troubleshoot.
2. Network congestion. Call your cellular carrier to confirm.
3. MicroSIM card is defective or physically damaged. Solution: replace MicroSIM.
4. Using an unsupported SIM (older series cut to shape of MicroSIM). Solution: Use an official MicroSIM supported by your cellular carrier.5. Reside in an area your cellular carrier deems "fringe zone" or "non-coverage zone". Solution: Purchase a GSM cellphone booster that supports 3G may help or MicroCell (AT&T provides this option).
6. Structural or electrical interference. Neither the carrier or Apple can remedy these external factors.
7. iPhone is set to auto search for GSM towers instead of manually set to your specific cellphone carrier. iPhone 4 > Settings > Carrier > Manually select your carrier.8. Your iPhone 4 was damaged during shipping (possible antenna disconnection with wiring). Solution: Troubleshoot with Apple or your cellular carrier tech support which may swap the iPhone.
10. iOS corrupted at time of install or update. Perform an iOS restore in iTunes and select new iPhone, not restore from backup. You can then sync your backed up apps but will need to setup you email. Remember to sync your iPhone first to iTunes before performing the "Restore" function.
11. iPhone is being used on a carrier that doesn't support EDGE, only EVDO for their non-3G coverage areas. So when not in a HSPA/UMTS coverage zone the user will experience drop outs due to the iPhone supports HSPA/EDGE. Solution: Stay in 3G coverage zone or switch to a provider that offers backwards compatibility for EDGE when not in 3G.
12. iPhone user is attempting to use iPhone 4 on unsupported network. Example cellular carrier states they offer 3G but licensed frequency is AWS (ie: T-Mobile, Wind Mobile, Public Mobile, SaskTel). Solution: Use a supported carrier frequency.
